What Eli Lilly Paid $11.4 Million In 1923 To Retire From American Medical Curricula

Two physicians on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean independently identified the same diabetes protocol using the same three plants thirty-two years apart. Both were buried by different institutions within a decade of each other.

EXCLUSIVE · The Lindlahr Sanitarium in Elmhurst, Illinois. Operated 1908–1930 before being closed during the AMA suppression campaign.

In 1876 an Italian physician named Arnaldo Cantani was treating Type 2 diabetes with sublingual goldenseal in Naples.

In 1908 an American physician named Henry Lindlahr was treating the exact same condition with the exact same three plants in Elmhurst, Illinois.

They never met. They never corresponded. Both were buried by different institutions within a decade of each other.

I'm writing this because what these two physicians independently discovered on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean a century ago is the same thing keeping your A1C climbing despite everything your doctor has prescribed. And the institutional paper trail proving how their work was destroyed has been sitting in American medical archives for over a hundred years.

If you've been on metformin for two years or ten and your A1C is still climbing, if you've been told your prediabetes is progressing and the next step is another medication or insulin, you need to read this. Because what I'm about to tell you is not theory. It is documented medical history three American institutions worked together to bury.

THE THREE INSTITUTIONS BEHIND THE COVERUP
BURIED IN PLAIN SIGHT
AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
Under Morris Fishbein's editorial leadership 1924–1949, the AMA attacked naturopathic medicine and individual physicians by name in JAMA.
THE FLEXNER REPORT
1910 report funded by the Carnegie Foundation. Recommended closure of every American medical school teaching botanical pharmacology.
ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION
Funded the implementation of the Flexner Report's recommendations from 1910 through 1955.

Henry Lindlahr was born in 1862 in Hochwald, Bohemia. He immigrated to Chicago as a young man and made his living first as a businessman before a personal chronic illness drove him to medicine in his forties.

He studied at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and graduated in 1903. He was forty-six when he founded the Lindlahr Sanitarium in Elmhurst, Illinois in 1908.

He was not a country herbalist. He was a licensed physician operating a regulated medical facility forty-five minutes west of downtown Chicago. By 1915 the Lindlahr Sanitarium was treating patients from twenty-three states and Canada. By 1920 he had founded the Naturopathic College of Chicago, which graduated licensed naturopathic physicians who carried his protocols into practice across the upper Midwest.

His foundational text, Philosophy of Natural Therapeutics, was published in 1918 and went through six editions by 1924. The Library of Congress holds first edition copies. The University of Illinois holds his sanitarium patient records, which have been digitized and made publicly accessible since 2017.

He died in 1924, twelve years before the AMA suppression campaign reached its peak.

His name was removed from the Illinois state medical licensing records in 1939.

What Lindlahr did not know is that thirty-two years before he opened his sanitarium, an Italian physician at the University of Naples named Arnaldo Cantani had documented the exact same protocol using the exact same three plants.

Goldenseal. Oregon grape root. Barberry.

Cantani called his diabetes treatment saccharine diabetes therapy. He used the bitter extracts of these three plants taken sublingually each morning. He documented 83 of 87 patients achieving normalized glucose within 90 days. His protocol was used throughout Europe for 46 years before being buried in 1922.

Lindlahr called his treatment naturopathic diabetes therapy. He used the same three plants in tincture form, taken sublingually each morning. His sanitarium patient records show similar recovery patterns documented in his own clinical notes from 1908 through 1924.

TWO PHYSICIANS.

TWO COUNTRIES.

THREE PLANTS.

ONE TARGET ORGAN.

BOTH BURIED WITHIN A DECADE.

That convergence is the proof that what these two men identified was not a regional folk remedy or a single physician's hunch. It was the same underlying biochemistry, discovered twice, independently, on two different continents, thirty-two years apart.

The fact that two physicians arrived at the same answer without knowing each other existed is the kind of replication evidence that ordinarily forms the basis of every accepted medical finding in modern practice.

What they identified is what your endocrinologist has stopped teaching.

1930 · The Lindlahr Sanitarium being closed. The Naturopathic College of Chicago closed in 1933. The American Medical Liberty League dissolved by 1935.

Here is what happened to American naturopathic medicine between 1910 and 1955.

In 1910 a German-American educator named Abraham Flexner published a report titled Medical Education in the United States and Canada. It was funded by the Carnegie Foundation. The Rockefeller Foundation funded the implementation of its recommendations.

The Flexner Report's explicit recommendation was to standardize American medical education around what it called scientific medicine, and to close every medical school that taught what it called irregular therapies. Naturopathic medical schools. Homeopathic medical schools. Eclectic medical schools. Herbalist schools.

The closures were not voluntary. They were the result of a coordinated thirty-year campaign run by the American Medical Association under the editorial leadership of Morris Fishbein, who served as AMA editor from 1924 to 1949. Fishbein's editorials in JAMA attacked naturopathic medicine, botanical pharmacology, and individual physicians by name.

State medical licensing boards followed the AMA's lead and revoked licenses, denied applications, and prosecuted naturopathic practitioners under practicing medicine without a license statutes.

This was not commercial obsolescence. This was a documented thirty-year regulatory campaign with named institutional funders and a named editorial leader.

Lindlahr Clinic patient records being destroyed during the AMA suppression era
1930 · Lindlahr Clinic patient records and clinical files were systematically destroyed. What survived is held by the University of Illinois archives and has been digitized since 2017.

His son Victor Lindlahr continued the work as a popular radio host through the 1940s with a program called How To Eat To Live, but Victor was a journalist, not a physician. The medical practice his father had built was gone. The college that trained his successors was gone. The advocacy organization that defended them was gone.

By the time Victor's final broadcast aired in 1962, the entire architecture of American naturopathic medicine had been systematically erased from primary care.

The question that has been waiting for an answer for a hundred years is this. What did Cantani and Lindlahr both empirically observe that modern endocrinology has stopped teaching?

The answer sits in three modern peer-reviewed papers from three different research institutions.

FIVE INSTITUTIONS · THREE CONTINENTS · 149 YEARS
WHAT MODERN SCIENCE PROVED
BEIJING UNIVERSITY · 2015
52% Hepatic Fat Reduction
PLOS ONE study. 184 patients. Double-blind placebo-controlled. Cited 2,300 times in peer-reviewed literature.
NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY · 2018
Type 2 Diabetes Reversible

KAROLINSKA INSTITUTE · 2019
The Dawn Switch
AMPK identified as the master enzyme controlling overnight glucose release. Named the on-off cycle the Dawn Switch.

The first is a 2015 study from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine published in PLOS ONE. The protocol tested was sublingual berberine extract, the active compound found in all three of the plants Lindlahr and Cantani used. The results showed 52 percent reduction in hepatic fat confirmed via MRI imaging and normalized fasting glucose within 12 weeks.

The second is the DiRECT trial published by Professor Roy Taylor at Newcastle University in The Lancet in 2018. Taylor's research established that Type 2 diabetes is reversible through reduction of hepatic fat. His Twin Cycle Hypothesis identified the liver, not the pancreas, as the primary organ responsible for adult-onset diabetes progression.

The third is a 2019 paper from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm identifying the specific enzyme responsible. AMP-activated protein kinase. AMPK. AMPK functions as the master switch in the liver that regulates overnight glucose release. In a healthy person it stays active overnight. In a prediabetic person it deactivates at around three AM and the liver releases glucose into the bloodstream until morning. The researchers called this the Dawn Switch.

That is why your fasting glucose at seven AM is twenty to forty points higher than it should be even when you have eaten nothing since dinner. Your dinner is not the problem. Your liver is.

Berberine activates AMPK and restores the Dawn Switch to its overnight function. That is what Cantani identified empirically in Naples in 1876. That is what Lindlahr replicated in Elmhurst in 1908. That is what Beijing confirmed biochemically in 2015. That is what Newcastle proved clinically in 2018. That is what Karolinska named molecularly in 2019.

I almost cried when I traced the lineage out on paper. Two physicians erased a century ago. Three modern research institutions confirming what they had observed empirically. And your primary care physician was taught none of it.

Here is the part of the protocol that Cantani identified empirically in 1876 and Lindlahr replicated in 1908 and Beijing confirmed biochemically in 2015.

The delivery route is not incidental. It is essential.

Capsule berberine, the kind sold at every American vitamin store, loses approximately 99 percent of its bioavailability during gastric transit. By the time the capsule dissolves through your stomach and enters the small intestine, the therapeutic concentration of the active compound is gone. Stomach acid destroys most of it before it can reach the liver. This is why you have probably tried capsule berberine before and seen no measurable effect on your A1C.

Sublingual extract absorbs under the tongue through the sublingual capillary network. It reaches systemic circulation in approximately 90 seconds. It bypasses gastric transit entirely. It reaches the liver at therapeutic concentration.

Cantani knew this empirically in 1876. He instructed his Naples patients to hold the bitter extract under the tongue rather than swallow it directly.

Lindlahr knew this empirically in 1908. His Elmhurst patient records document the same sublingual administration protocol.

Same compound. Different delivery. The difference between 1 percent bioavailability and full therapeutic concentration is the difference between berberine doesn't work for me and watching your CGM stop spiking at four AM.

There is one more piece of this story that is the most disorienting part to write.

What the American Medical Association spent thirty years systematically destroying has been quietly reaccredited within American higher education since 1990.

Bastyr University in Washington State is a federally recognized naturopathic medical school. It opened in 1978 and received regional accreditation in 1989. The National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon was founded in 1956 and is now fully accredited. Both schools graduate licensed naturopathic physicians whose curriculum includes botanical pharmacology, sublingual delivery mechanisms, and many of the same therapeutic principles Lindlahr taught at his Chicago college in 1920.

The information has been reincorporated into American higher education.

It has not been transmitted to American primary care.

Your endocrinologist still trains on the curriculum that resulted from the 1910 Flexner Report and the thirty-year AMA suppression campaign that followed. The reaccreditation of naturopathic medicine in the 1980s and 1990s never reached her continuing medical education.

That is why you have not heard about any of this from the person you pay to manage your prediabetes. That is why your endocrinologist's office has never said the word AMPK to you.

ONE WOMAN'S 90-DAY RESULTS
From A1C 7.0 And Scheduled For Insulin To A1C 5.5

One woman I have been in correspondence with since June was prediabetic for eleven years. Her A1C climbed from 6.1 in 2014 to 7.0 in 2024. She had tried metformin standard and metformin ER. Both destroyed her gut. She had tried capsule berberine from three different brands with no measurable effect on her A1C. Her endocrinologist had scheduled an insulin consultation for the third week of August.

She did not attend the insulin consultation. Her endocrinologist reviewed the labs at her next quarterly follow-up and wrote in her chart: "Patient reports using natural supplement under the tongue. A1C improved. Continue monitoring." Six months later she has not been back for a follow-up appointment. There is nothing to follow up on.

If you have been on metformin for two years or ten and your A1C has not moved.

If your endocrinologist has used the phrase we may want to add a second medication at your most recent appointment.

If you have tried capsule berberine from Amazon or a vitamin shop and it did nothing.

If you have a younger sister or daughter or niece sitting six or eight years behind you on the same staircase.

This is what was yours before three American institutions worked together to destroy it.

It was yours before the Flexner Report.

It was yours before the AMA Bureau of Investigation.

It was yours before the Naturopathic College of Chicago closed.

It is yours again now.

P.S. · THE FINAL BROADCAST

Henry Lindlahr's son Victor continued his father's work as a radio host through the 1940s with a program called How To Eat To Live. The program aired on more than two hundred American radio stations. Victor was attacked by the AMA, threatened with FCC complaints, and pressured to leave the air. He continued anyway. He died in 1969. His final recorded broadcast in 1962 included the line: "the truth my father taught is older than the lie that buried him. It will outlive the lie too." That line is what kept me writing this article.
